MBSR at Mountain Waves Healing ArtsMindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a course designed to help students cultivate their own mindfulness practice.

Mindfulness is a way of waking up to your life, of learning to relate directly to whatever is happening in your life. It is a way of doing something for yourself that only you can do—consciously working with your own stress, pain, illness, and the challenges of daily life.

By enrolling in MBSR, you will have the opportunity to learn the following:
· Practical methods for focusing your attention
· Coping skills to improve your ability to handle stressful situations
· To increase awareness of the interconnectedness of mind and body in health and illness
· Gentle body-focused conditioning exercises to strengthen and release muscle tension
· To cultivate greater balance in your life

The class schedule consists of 8 weekly classes of 2 hours each and one 5 hour day of mindfulness. There are over 20 total hours of instruction.

This course is modeled on MBSR developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. This program has been taught for over 30 years and research indicates efficacy in a range of areas of both physical and mental distress.

Nicolette Sachs, course instructor, has taught Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction to approximately 150 students during the past 9 years. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Nicolette has sustained a private practice in Flagstaff for 16 years.

There will be a free orientation session held on Tuesday, August 14th, 2012, from 6:00-7:30pm. The full course begins on Tuesday, August 28th, 6:00pm-8:00pm. The course will go for 8 consecutive weeks. The Day of Mindfulness is scheduled for Saturday, October 6th. The cost for the 8 weekly classes, including the day of mindfulness and course materials, is $250.00.

The course location is: Music Together, 2708 N. 4th St., Suite A-6, Flagstaff (located in the Knoles Village Center off 4th Street).

Please contact Nicolette at (928) 526-1961  or nssachs@ gmail.com with any questions, to sign up for the orientation, and to reserve your place in this class.

Making Room for the New

This year is starting off with some exciting changes at Mountain Waves Healing Arts.  The sale of the yoga studio portion of our center is prompting us to make changes in the hallway aquazae aquatic bodyworktraffic pattern.  This means that we need to use the space occupied by the AquaZaé pool to accommodate that change.  This past weekend, we dismantled the pool making room for a new opportunity to take shape within Mountain Waves Healing Arts.

The dismantling process began on the afternoon of Friday January 28th with the draining of the water, but not before I took a ceremonial float and meditation in the pool.  I enjoyed the opportunity to reflect on my training in aquatic bodywork at Harbin Hot Springs with Harold Dull, the creator of WATSU®.  I also reflected on the many aquatic therapies I performed in the pool and the many faces of amazement upon which I gazed at the conclusion of each session.  While my floating meditation was bittersweet, I knew it was time to let go and help ensure the future sustainability of Mountain Waves as a whole.

Pool Disassembly

The crew makes quick work of the pool.

The initial assembly of the pool, over three years ago, was fraught with complications and delays.  The dis-assembly only presented some minor hesitations in draining the water without interruption, almost as if the pool was reluctant to let go as well.  However, once I established a steady flow of water through the siphon hose, the pool finished draining over night.

Pool Disassembly

A few features of the pool remain as reminders of what once was.

On Saturday morning I, along with two helpers, got to work and completed the removal in only about 4 hours plus a couple of hours to clean up after ourselves.  At this point the room remains empty, yet in no time we will open up the passageway from the front hallway to serve as the new access to the massage and bodywork treatment rooms.  How we will use the rest of the open space is undecided, so we want to know your thoughts.  What services would you like to have available at Mountain Waves that we currently don’t provide?  Please let us know with a post at the bottom of this blog.

Empty Pool Room

The empty room: now a beacon for the possibility of the new.

Sure this transition is sad in some ways, but the new opportunity it presents is exciting!  That’s what I’m looking forward to.  I hope you’ll join me.
